The Spanish experiment – cutting ads from public channel TVE to free up advertising cash for the ailing broadcast channles

The Wall Street Journal reported that the first signs in October looked pretty promising, “there has been a softening of the price and revenue decline month on month, but we need the data from November to make a true evaluation of the impact,” the general manager of Telecinco’s advertising division. Francisco Alum, said in a conference call with analysts.

Earlier this year, Spain’s government decided to phase out advertising in public TV channel TVE starting in October, in a move to free up more advertising for the country’s ailing private broadcasters. TVE will fully cut advertising in January 2010.
