China Cracks Down On Porn Content

According to a recent announcement made by the Chinese government on its Ministry of Public Security website, it has been revealed that Chinese law enforcement agencies have arrested 5394 people in the past 12 months for being involved in internet pornography. 

The police authorities reported that anti-pornographic drive initiated by the government had resulted in 5394 arrests and 4186 criminal investigations in 2009 and upon closure inspection of data, it was found that these numbers have increased 4 times since 2008.  The statement posted on the website claimed that the Chinese government was committed to eradicate pornography from the internet as it was “overwhelming the internet and posing a threat to the welfare of children.” The government has vowed to strengthen the country’s internet control policies, which are already considered as one of the most stringent in the world. 

The statement that was posted on the internet security section of the website announced that the police will “intensify punishments for internet operations that violate laws and regulations”. The statement also indicated that the government will strengthen the monitoring of information posted on the internet and has also asked “press internet service providers to put in place preventive technology”.
