Google is aiming for something like that with an upgrade to its Google News product. The company announced on Wednesday that it was adding a new feature called “News for you” that will offer a stream of local, customized and socially edited content. Google will let users choose which sources show up most prominently in their news feeds. A favorite source will appear above the rest. Google is also trying to automatically choose the big stories of the day and create pages devoted to those events. And it is introducing local news highlights, showing weather and headlines based on a city, or in some instances a specific neighborhood. Then there’s a social sharing feature. Readers can share “story clusters,” where a group of stories are bunched up together exposing links to several news sources. The revamped Google News site is rolling out for the English-language edition of Google News in the United States on Wednesday and will reach in other countries in the coming months.
